Butte College invited the community to ‘leave a mark’ on the new Welding & Manufacturing building that will triple the size of its current welding footprint and expand the welding program significantly on Friday, October 26 at 10:30 a.m., 3536 Butte Campus Drive, adjacent to the Facilities, Planning, Management Building. Butte’s welding students, along with trustees, faculty, staff and community members were on hand to sign their names on a beam that will become part of the building.
“I want to express our excitement for this new welding and manufacturing building and invite the community to come out and leave a mark on the building by signing their names on one of the beams which will be used in the building. This new facility doubles the size of our welding training facility and provide students with state-of-the-art facilities,” said Samia Yaqub, Butte College President.
The 59,525-square-foot building budget is $18.1 million and is funded through Measure J, a $190 million bond measure approved by voters in 2016. The building is slated to open in September 2019. The facility will include four classrooms, two dedicated welding labs with 92 welding stations, a dedicated state-of-the-art manufacturing lab, rod storage, tank storage, and a large outdoor laboratory. The building will be constructed on the main campus just southwest of the Facilities Planning and Management building. In addition, the facility will include a rooftop solar system. The plan is to install enough renewable energy to off-set the added consumption to help prevent additional on-going utility costs to the District.
The construction contract for the new facility was awarded to Slater & Son, Chico, who has partnered with JK Architecture & Engineering from Auburn. The construction project is utilizing 96 percent local subcontractors and is funded through Measure J, a $190 million bond measure voters approved in November 2016. The facility will house a permanent welding and manufacturing center and will increase welding and manufacturing educational programs to meet industry demands.
